Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association – Busy for YOU

ANNUAL 2014 BCNA Meeting & Elections – Monday, January 13, 7 p.m.

Your Beachwood Canyon Neighborhood Association has been busy on many fronts this past year to preserve the quality of life in the community. Here’s a summary of what we have been doing:

PUBLIC SAFETY:
We recently submitted a request to have the curbs on Beachwood converted to handicapped access.

OUTREACH:
Communication is on the top of our list of priorities. We maintain a humble but efficient website and send out monthly newsletters. Take a look at these by going to BeachwoodCanyon.org and click on “Archive”.

CHARITY:
The BCNA’s charitable donations include the LAPD Mentoring Program, the LAPD Substation on Cherokee and Cheremoya Avenue Elementary School. We have committed 15% of our annual budget to the school and would like to see our donations grow.

TOURISM:
Our Tourism Committee has been busy addressing the impacts of tourism on our community both on the ground and above our heads. We are hard at work building a website that takes tourists to wonderful places outside of our neighborhood to get that perfect shot of the Hollywood Sign. Check out: TheHollywoodSign.org  It is our pleasure to work in partnership with the Hollywoodland Homeowners Association on tourism matter.

HELICOPTER NOISE:
BCNA leaders testified before a special hearing called by Rep Howard Berman to hear local impacts of low-flying non-emergency aircraft over our canyon. We participated in the hearing and our voice was heard by reps from Congressmen Sherman and Schiff and FAA reps from Washington, DC as well as the FAA Western Pacific Regional Office.

HOLLYWOOD COMMUNITY PLAN:
We have been actively supporting efforts to stop the Hollywood Community Plan which focuses an excessive amount of new density in the heart of Hollywood. Our involvement includes fundraising to help the legal costs that are steep when David fights Golliath. If you want more information or wish to donate to the cause, go to SaveHollywood.org.

HOLLYWOOD MILLENNIUM OPPOSITION:
BCNA has taken the lead with 40 other organizations and 6 neighborhood councils to appeal a 1.2 million square foot project that is planned for Vine Street next to Capitol Records. This twin tower project is opposed by Caltrans and USGS indicates that the southern strand of the active Hollywood faultline runs beneath the entire project. A lawsuit has now been filed and we continue to collecting funds to keep this fight going: StopTheMillenniumHollywood.org

SECURITY:
We continue to encourage and assist in the creation of Neighborhood Watch programs. We interface with the Hollywood Police and Building and Safety to secure abandoned and bank-owned properties in our area. As always, we are very interested in the local crime trends and work to educate neighbors on crime prevention.

FIRE SAFETY:
We helped create a safer environment in Beachwood Canyon by supporting and joining with the HHA in efforts to choose appropriate places for Smokey the Bear ‘no smoking’ signs at tourist locations and Griffith Park trailheads.

QUALITY OF LIFE:
We address issues like potholes, lighting, traffic, bulky item pick up and parking.

PARTNERSHIP:
We have built good relationships with the Hollywood Police, the City Council office, City Planning, and various other departments and agencies as well as the Hollywoodland Homeowners Association. As a result, we enjoy relatively good responses to neighborhood issues.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT:
Your dues help keep this association healthy enough to react to neighborhood needs as they arise including the costs of appeals, mailings, and other related business expenses. Our membership fee is a very low $20. We would be most grateful if you could give additional support to our efforts. We thank you and invite you to participate in your neighborhood.
